Three Things Crews Get Wrong About Equipment Grounding

Myth 1: It is just a ground prong, the fan still works fine without it.

Reality: The equipment works, but the primary safety mechanism preventing electrocution has been destroyed. Removing the ground prong turns the worker into the path of least resistance if an electrical fault occurs.

When a device is properly grounded, the third prong provides a permanent, continuous, and low-resistance path back to the electrical source. If a hot wire inside that summer fan vibrates loose and touches the metal casing, the ground wire catches that rogue current and channels it safely back to the breaker panel, instantly tripping the breaker. OSHA standard 29 CFR 1910.304(g)(5) strictly requires this grounding path to be permanent, continuous, and effective. When someone snaps off the ground prong to make a cord fit into an older two-prong outlet or a cheap extension cord, that safety path is gone. The fan will still run, but if a fault happens, the metal casing becomes energized. The moment a worker touches the fan, the current travels through their body to reach the ground, resulting in a severe shock.

Myth 2: Using a three-to-two prong adapter is a safe workaround for older office outlets.

Reality: These adapters often fail to provide a continuous path to ground, leaving the equipment completely ungrounded.

Commonly called cheater plugs, these adapters have a small metal tab or wire loop designed to sit under the screw holding the outlet cover in place. The theory is that the screw connects to the metal receptacle box, which is connected to a grounding wire. However, relying on this is highly dangerous. OSHA standard 29 CFR 1910.334(a)(3)(ii) specifically prohibits altering attachment plugs or receptacles in a manner that prevents proper continuity of the equipment grounding conductor. If the building's wiring lacks a true ground at that box, or if the screw is loose, or if the box is plastic, the adapter provides zero grounding protection. The equipment appears safely plugged in, but the energized source hazard remains entirely unmitigated.

Myth 3: Office fans and phone chargers do not draw enough power to cause a serious shock.

Reality: It is not the normal power draw of the device that causes injury; it is the fault current delivered by the circuit. A standard office outlet can deliver more than enough current to cause severe injury.

A common misunderstanding is confusing the normal operating current of a device with the current available during an electrical fault. A small desk fan might only draw a small amount of current during normal operation. However, a standard office wall receptacle is wired to a 15-amp or 20-amp breaker. Even a small fraction of the current required to trip a standard breaker can cause severe injury or death. If an ungrounded fan casing becomes energized and a worker touches it, the circuit will push current through the worker, creating a severe shock hazard long before the 15-amp breaker ever notices a problem.
