What Happens When We Rush Unplanned Deliveries

Picture a typical summer morning on site. A vendor arrives to drop off a pallet of bottled water and two large coolers of ice at the edge of the staging area. The forklift is currently busy on the other side of the project, and the delivery is sitting directly in the sun. Wanting to get the supplies cooled down and out of the way of vehicle traffic, a worker decides to manually unload the pallet. They bend at the waist, reach across the wooden pallet to grab a heavy case of water, and twist their torso to toss it to a coworker. In that fraction of a second, the worker experiences an acute muscle spasm and a sharp, severe pain in their lower back, resulting in a lumbar strain.

The human spine acts as a lever system. When you reach away from your body to grab a heavy load, you extend the horizontal distance between the load and your lower back, which acts as the fulcrum. This mechanical disadvantage multiplies the compressive forces on the spinal discs.   • Administrative: Implement strict staging rules, require two-person team lifts for all large ice coolers, and sequence work so mechanical equipment is available when deliveries arrive.
  • PPE: Wear standard, well-fitting work gloves to improve grip friction, reducing the need to awkwardly pinch or clutch condensation-slicked items.

- Keep lifts between mid-thigh and mid-chest height whenever possible to maximize your body's mechanical advantage. - Step as close to the load as physically possible to minimize horizontal reach and reduce spinal compression. - Move your feet to turn your entire body toward your destination rather than twisting your torso while holding the weight.
