- Alternatively, the exposed vertical steel could have been physically bent over to completely remove the vertical impalement hazard.
- If caps were unavailable, the crew could have constructed a lumber trough built over the row of rebar to create a continuous protective cover.

- Know the difference: Standard, small plastic mushroom caps are only for scratch protection on horizontal rebar. If you are working above vertical steel, you must use square, steel-reinforced impalement caps.
- Inspect the caps: Take a cap off and look inside. If you do not see a metal plate or metal insert, it will not stop an impalement.
- Watch your work zones: If your task requires you to be elevated on a ladder, scaffold, or formwork above exposed vertical steel, that steel must be capped, bent, or covered before you leave the ground.
